4'-(Octyloxy)-4-biphenylcarbonitrile (OPPC) is a crystalline polymorph that belongs to the liquid crystal group and has two low energy forms: nematic and smectic. OPPC has transport properties that are temperature dependent, with nematic phase transition temperatures at about -120 degrees Celsius. It is also characterized by low activation energies for the solute transport and a low molecular weight. The thermal expansion coefficient of OPPC is lower than that of water, which makes it an attractive material for use in thermometers due to its ability to measure small changes in temperature. The nmr spectra of OPPC show chemical structures including the molecule itself and models systems such as transition metal complexes.
