Octyn-3-ol is an organic compound that is used as a solvent. It is chiral, but can be desymmetrized to produce a racemic mixture. The two enantiomers are termed (R)- and (S)-octyn-3-ol. The (R)-enantiomer is more soluble in the majority of solvents, while the (S)-enantiomer has a higher boiling point. Octyn-3-ol can be obtained by reacting allenes with chloride in the presence of palladium catalyst. This reaction produces high yields of octyn-3-ol and is catalytic in nature.
