Okanin is a natural compound that belongs to the class of phenylpropanoids. It has been shown to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. Okanin is also an inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx). It inhibits the activity of these enzymes by binding to their active site, preventing them from catalyzing their reaction. Okanin has been studied in vitro for its effects on cancer cells and found to be cytotoxic against HL-60 cells. Okanin also showed promising results in vivo with respect to inhibiting the growth of liver tumors in mice. The plant species from which it is derived can be grown in many different climates, making it a sustainable agricultural product.
