Oxyfluorfen is a chloroacetanilide herbicide that inhibits photosynthesis by blocking the light reaction in plants. Oxyfluorfen is also genotoxic, and has been shown to inhibit the enzyme activity of cytochrome P450, which is necessary for the metabolism of various drugs. In addition, oxyfluorfen has been shown to have an effect on energy metabolism and polymerase chain reactions that alter DNA replication and transcription. Oxyfluorfen has been shown to be effective in treating congestive heart failure as well as an anti-inflammatory agent. The toxicity of this compound can be reduced by adding it to a matrix containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or polyacrylamide gel (PAA). This reduces the amount of terminal residues in tissue samples due to its adsorption onto these matrices.
