4-Pentenenitrile is a catalyst that is used in the production of unsaturated alkyls. It can be prepared by reacting acetylene with hydrogen cyanide and formaldehyde, and it may also be obtained from the thermal decomposition of 2-pentene. 4-Pentenenitrile has been shown to have an effect on liver cells, where it inhibits the activity of fatty acid synthase. This inhibition prevents the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids, which are required for the synthesis of phospholipids and cell membranes. The reaction mechanism for 4-pentenenitrile is not yet fully understood, but it has been suggested that it reacts with an abcg2 transporter to produce a phosphite intermediate. Structural analysis has revealed that 4-pentenenitrile contains a hydroxy group and can be converted into an isomeric form by catalytic hydrogenation.
