Pentaethylene glycol is a surfactant that is used in the formulation of topical products. It has been shown to have high values (i.e., low surface tension) in a model system, and it has been used to reduce the thermal expansion coefficient by forming a monolayer at the interface with water. Trifluoroacetic acid is added as an impurity to reduce the melting point and increase the solubility of pentaethylene glycol. Pentaethylene glycol has been used as a solvent for polymers, such as polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, and polypropylene, but can also be found in pharmaceuticals such as anti-diarrheal agents or eye drops.
Pentaethylene glycol is also used as surfactant in some biological samples, including blood serum and urine. It has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth when present at concentrations of 1%. The structure of pentaethylene glycol
