Agonist of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ), useful for the treatment and prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to the class of thiazolidinediones (TZDs), which increase insulin sensitivity and glucose uptake in peripheral tissues. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease and was shown to atheroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in animal models.
