2,3-Pyridinecarboxylic anhydride is a nitrogen nucleophile that reacts with copper complex in the presence of phosphorus pentachloride to produce a compound with an optical sensor. The Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,3-pyridinecarboxylic anhydride with benzene gives picolinic acid and aniline. Nitro groups can be introduced on the pyridine ring by reacting it with nitric acid or hydrochloric acid, and the methyl anthranilate can be obtained from 2,3-pyridinecarboxylic anhydride by oxidation. This chemical has been shown to have antiviral properties by inhibiting HIV reverse transcriptase.
