Pilocarpine nitrate is a surface methodology that is used to determine the chemical stability of benzalkonium chloride. It has been shown to be a good model for vivo studies. Pilocarpine nitrate is an important surface methodology for the determination of particle size distribution and its application in diagnostic testing. It has been successfully applied as a surface methodology for sodium salt processing optimization and skin model testing. Pilocarpine nitrate is also used as a pharmacological treatment for glaucoma, which can lead to elevated intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage, when administered topically or orally. This drug binds to muscarinic receptors in the ciliary muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle fibers and thus lowering intraocular pressure.
