3-Pyrroline is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of some pharmaceuticals. 3-Pyrroline is a white solid with a melting point of -8°C and a boiling point of 115°C. The compound has been shown to be an exothermic reaction in water, which may be due to its conversion to 3-aminopropanenitrile and hydrogen cyanide. 3-Pyrroline has been shown to react with methylamine and form the product 3-pyrrolidinol. This product can then undergo metathesis reactions with acetic acid or anhydrous sodium to form 2,5-dimethylhexane or 2,4,6-trimethylheptane respectively. The compound also reacts with hydroxyl groups in proteins and nucleic acids such as DNA or RNA, forming n-oxides that have resonance energies in the infrared region of the spectrum.
