Phthalan is a dinucleotide phosphate that has antimicrobial activity. It inhibits microbial growth by interfering with the synthesis of phospholipids in the cell membrane. Phthalan is active against Gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Sarcina lutea. It also has amine-releasing properties that are similar to tricyclic antidepressants. Phthalan can be used to treat microbial infections caused by these bacteria since it binds to 2-adrenergic receptors, which inhibit microbial growth through magnesium salt (MgSO4) and ethylene diamine (EDA). The uptake of phthalan by cells is increased by fatty acid (FA) binding.
