Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is a polymer that is used in wastewater treatment. It is made from the monomer, acrylonitrile, and has a molecular weight of about 150,000. PAN has been shown to have high nitrogen content and can be used for hydrogen bonding interactions with other polymers. The reaction mechanism of PAN involves intramolecular hydrogen bonding. This process can be optimized using surface methodology. Polyacrylonitrile also has a constant pressure coefficient of thermal expansion and a process optimization parameter that is close to 1.5. The nitrogen atoms in polyacrylonitrile are responsible for its water permeability and methyl ethyl groupings that allow it to interact with other polymers. Polyacrylonitrile also has redox potentials that range from -0.8 to -1.2 volts depending on its environment, which means it can act as an electron donor or electron acceptor during oxidation and reduction reactions respectively
