Pyridine-2-acetonitrile is an organic compound with the formula CH3CN. It has a fluorescence emission maximum at about 335 nm and a molar refractivity of 1.8. Pyridine-2-acetonitrile is an ester of pyridine and acetonitrile, which has a viscosity of 0.24 cP at 25 °C and a hydrochloric acid solubility of 3.1 g/100 mL (0.5 M). In addition, it reacts with chlorine to form chloroform, which is soluble in water and insoluble in ether or alcohols. Pyridine-2-acetonitrile is used as the starting material for the synthesis of coumarin derivatives and other compounds that contain nitrogen atoms, such as nucleophilic agents used in coordination chemistry. The quantum theory provides a more efficient method for predicting the properties of this compound than classical theories do.
