4-(tert-Pentyl)phenol is a disinfectant that inhibits bacterial growth. It is also a competitive inhibitor of the aromatase enzyme, which catalyzes the conversion of androstenedione and testosterone to estrogens. 4-(tert-Pentyl)phenol has been shown to inhibit the growth of human breast cancer cells in vitro by inhibiting 17β-estradiol synthesis. This chemical also has inhibitory properties on fatty acid synthesis and can be used as a solid catalyst in analytical chemistry. 4-(tert-Pentyl)phenol may be used as an inhibitor of histone deacetylases, which are enzymes that remove acetyl groups from lysine residues on histones thereby regulating gene expression and cellular differentiation.
