Propylboronic acid is a chemical compound that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. It is a carboxylic acid and an aryl halide, which can be easily converted to other compounds by the addition of nucleophiles. Propylboronic acid has been shown to inhibit serine proteases, such as thrombin, which are involved in the coagulation of blood. It also has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties and can be used as an antiviral agent against hepatitis C virus (HCV). The use of this chemical may lead to autoimmune diseases, such as lupus erythematosus. The mechanism for this effect is not yet clear, but it may involve inhibition of protein synthesis and induction of apoptosis.
