Pimpinellin is a natural compound that has been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities. It has been demonstrated to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and light-induced damage in cultured human retinal cells. Pimpinellin also inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α, which are involved in autoimmune diseases. The mechanism of action for pimpinellin may involve inhibition of fatty acid synthesis and the downstream production of prostaglandins. Pimpinellin also has a coumarin derivatives that may affect cell growth and act as antioxidants by scavenging reactive oxygen species.
