Proteinase, also known as sutilain, is an enzyme derived from Bacillus subtilis that has been shown to have a variety of potential therapeutic applications. It has been found to be effective in breaking down chitosan, a natural polymer found in the shells of crustaceans and insects. This ability makes it useful for the development of new wound dressings and other medical products. In addition, sutilain has been shown to inhibit kinases, which are enzymes involved in cell signaling pathways that are often dysregulated in cancer cells. This inhibition can lead to tumor cell death through apoptosis. Chinese researchers have developed an analog of sutilain that shows promising anticancer activity against human cancer cells by acting as a kinase inhibitor. This research suggests that sutilain and its analogs may have potential as novel cancer therapies and inhibitors.
