Patuletin is a natural compound that belongs to the group of sesquiterpene lactones. Patuletin has been shown to have cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory properties in vitro. Patuletin induces cell lysis by binding to nuclear DNA, which blocks transcription and replication of cellular DNA. Patuletin also inhibits the growth of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes by reducing the production of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA) from tyrosine. This PHBA acts as a cofactor for the enzyme phenylalanine hydroxylase, which catalyzes conversion of tyrosine to PHBA. In addition, patuletin may inhibit protein synthesis by interfering with signal pathways such as MAPK/ERK and PI3K/Akt signaling.
