Phosphorylase is an enzyme that catalyses the conversion of glycogen to glucose-1-phosphate and glucose. The phosphorylase enzyme is also involved in the conversion of glycogen to glucose-6-phosphate and glucose, which are important for glycolysis. Phosphorylase is a rate-limiting enzyme in glycogenolysis, which is the process by which glycogen is broken down into glucose. Glycogenolysis is inhibited by insulin, glucagon, and epinephrine. This inhibits phosphorylase activity, thus regulating blood sugar levels. Phosphorylase has been studied extensively as a potential therapeutic agent for cancer treatment and as a treatment for diabetes mellitus type 1.
