Potassium carbonate is a white crystalline solid that is soluble in water. It is used as a buffer in aqueous solutions and as an ingredient in baking powder. Potassium carbonate reacts with phosphorus pentoxide to form potassium phosphate, water vapor, and carbon dioxide. The solubility of the product increases with increasing temperature. The solubility of potassium carbonate decreases with decreasing pH, which may be due to an increase in the concentration of hydroxide ions. Potassium carbonate has been shown to inhibit the production of histamine from mast cells and prevent allergic symptoms. This drug also has been shown to have an effect on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity and receptor activity for group P2 prostaglandins.
