Polyquaternium 1 is a polymer that is used in the formulation of topical antimicrobial agents. It has been shown to have a toxicity profile that is similar to other polymers. Polyquaternium 1 has been shown to be active against a wide range of bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and also exhibits activity against fungi. The mechanism of action for Polyquaternium 1 appears to be due to its ability to bind to the bacterial cell wall and prevent the attachment and growth of microorganisms on the surface. The acyl chain length may affect the efficacy of this polymer. Polyquaternium 1 is synthesized by free radical polymerization methods such as atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), which can produce linear chains with uniform acyl chain lengths. This polymer can also be made using ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) or nitroxide mediated coupling reactions, which can produce non-uniform chains
