Product Information
5-Phenylpenta-2,4-dienal is a betaine molecule that has been shown to deshield the carbonyl group of aldehydes. The activation energy for this process is higher than that of other mercaptals because the 5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienal molecule has two electrons in its π* orbital. This molecule also shows an increase in reactivity when it is in the conformation of a gauche (trans) configuration. Kinetic studies have shown that 5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienal reacts with the carbonyl group at a faster rate than other mercaptals such as thioglycolic acid and 3,5,-dimercapto-1,2 propanediol. Thermodynamic studies have also shown that 5-phenylpenta-2,4-dienal can be used as an additive to help prevent polymerization
