3-sn-Phosphatidylethanolamine is a phosphatidic acid that is used in the production of phospholipids and other lipid molecules. It is a component of the major phospholipid classes, including phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and sphingomyelin. 3-sn-Phosphatidylethanolamine can be obtained by hydrolysis of natural fats or synthesis from ethanolamine. The hydrolysis yields are dependent on the length of the fatty acid chains; for example, the yield for lauric acid is greater than that for palmitic acid. The ester linkage between the glycerol backbone and phosphate group is formed by an esterification reaction with ethanolamine.
