Pyromellitic diimide is a high-temperature, thermally stable, and photostable intramolecular hydrogen acceptor that has been used in the synthesis of a variety of organic compounds. The redox potentials for pyromellitic diimide are higher than those for other intramolecular hydrogen acceptors, which allows it to be used in reactions involving electron transfer without the need to use an external reductant. Pyromellitic diimide has antimicrobial properties and is active against Gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. It also has structural similarities with fatty acids and can be used as a precursor in the synthesis of diimides. X-ray crystal structures have been obtained for pyromellitic diimide as well as its hydrogen-bonded complexes with nitrogen atoms, which show that this molecule can form hydrogen bonds with itself.
