Polycaprolactone is a polyester that can be synthesized by condensation of caprolactone with a hydroxyl-terminated polyvinyl alcohol. The polymer exhibits biological properties, such as being an inhibitor molecule for the enzyme phosphatase. Polycaprolactone has been shown to be effective in vivo and in vitro against bacterial strains, including wild-type strains and carcinoma cell lines. This polymer also showed no adverse effects on fetal bovine tissue when used at concentrations up to 10%. Polycaprolactone was able to inhibit the growth of cancer cells by binding to copper chloride and dibutyltin oxide and converting them into reactive oxygen species that damage DNA.
