Polyethylene glycol methacrylate (PEGMA) is a polymer that consists of methacrylic acid and polyethylene glycol. PEGMA is used in the synthesis of water-soluble polymers with a broad range of properties, such as biodegradability, hydrophilicity, and solubility. PEGMA can be prepared by reacting methacrylic acid with polyethylene glycol to form a copolymer. The average molecular weight of PEGMA can be controlled by varying the reaction conditions, such as temperature, pressure, or solvent composition. PEGMA has been shown to form nanometric capsules when it is dissolved in chloroform at high temperatures. These capsules are stable for hours and are able to encapsulate small model systems such as erythrocytes and latex beads. This technique has been applied successfully to microfabrication techniques using photolithography that use an x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (
