2-Propoxyethanol is a glycol ether. It has a high boiling point, low toxicity, and low volatility, which makes it useful as a solvent in detergent compositions. 2-Propoxyethanol also has the ability to react with metal hydroxides or metal oxides. This reaction can be used to remove hydrogen fluoride from solution or to convert metal hydroxides into metal oxides. In addition, 2-propoxyethanol is used as an optical sensor for ethylene diamine because it is sensitive to changes in refractive index.
2-Propoxyethanol reacts with hydroxyl groups in the presence of a base such as magnesium salt or sodium hydroxide to form ester bonds. The reaction mechanism for this process is shown below:
