3,3-Pentamethylene glutarimide is an amide that can be used for the synthesis of gabapentin. It is synthesized from cyclohexanone and hydrochloric acid in a reaction that utilizes ammonium salt as a catalyst. 3,3-Pentamethylene glutarimide reacts with deionized water to form the monamide product. The filtrate is collected and concentrated before it is cooled to produce gabapentin.
