4-Penten-1-ol is a reactive compound that has been shown to react with a number of biological molecules. It reacts with hydroxyl groups of eugenol, forming an ester product. 4-Penten-1-ol also reacts with diphenyl sulfoxide in the formation of tetrahydropyran and unsaturated alkyl. The intramolecular hydrogen bond formed between the hydroxyl group and the carbonyl carbon atom is important in the stability and reactivity of this molecule. 4-Penten-1-ol can be found in biological samples such as plasma, urine, and saliva. This molecule is used as a marker for uptake by fatty acids.
