Perindopril is a prodrug that is metabolized to its active form, ramipril. It belongs to the group of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and is used for the treatment of hypertension. The hydroxy group reacts with benzyl chloride in an organic solvent, forming a molecule with a chloride group. This reaction takes place in a reaction vessel that signifies stereoselectively, meaning only one stereoisomer is produced. Perindopril undergoes an acidic amino function, which makes it more difficult for this drug to be absorbed through the gastrointestinal system. In addition, perindopril binds to thionyl chloride or chlorine in anhydrous sodium, which makes it more soluble in water.
