Phenformin hydrochloride is a phenformin derivative that is used as an oral hypoglycemic. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids in the liver and to reduce the size of lipid droplets, which are a hallmark of hepatic steatosis. Phenformin hydrochloride also inhibits the polymerase chain reaction and mitochondrial membrane potential, which results in reduced oxidative stress and apoptosis. This drug has been shown to have anti-infectious effects against infectious diseases such as typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and malaria. Phenformin hydrochloride may also be carcinogenic, due to its ability to induce skin cancer in mice with a genetic predisposition for this type of cancer. The drug should not be administered to patients with metabolic disorders or patients who are receiving chemotherapy agents that affect cell proliferation because it can exacerbate these conditions.
