Phenothiazine-10-propionitrile (PTZ) is a phenothiazine derivative that has been characterized at the molecular level by X-ray crystallography. PTZ has been shown to bind to the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis. PTZ binds to two amino acids (serine and aspartate) in the active site of the ribosome and forms hydrogen bonds with two other amino acids (histidine and tyrosine). PTZ also exhibits fluorescence. This compound is partially ionizable and its profile can be analysed using different techniques, such as photophysical or X-ray data.
