Phenylacetone can be synthesized by reacting phenylacetic acid with either sodium or methyl ethyl ketone. The reaction mechanism for this reaction includes the formation of a nitro group from sodium nitrite, which then reacts with phenylacetic acid to form an intermediate. This intermediate reacts with methyl ethyl ketone to form phenylacetone, which is then hydrolyzed to produce methamphetamine. Phenylacetone also has the ability to react with hydrogen peroxide and form 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde and benzene.
