Phthalimidoacetone is an antimicrobial agent that contains a carboxy, hydroxy, and imidazoline group. It has been shown to have antibacterial activity against bacteria such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. The antimicrobial activity of phthalimidoacetone is due to the formation of nitro groups on the molecule which are reactive with thiols in the bacterial cell wall. This reaction leads to the destruction of microbial cell walls and subsequent death. Phthalimidoacetone also has an antibacterial effect when combined with hydrochloric acid and heterocycles.
