15-cis-Phytoene is a carotenoid that is synthesized from phytoene in the plastid of plant cells. It has been shown to be an intermediate in the synthesis of other carotenoids, such as zeta-carotene and beta-carotene. 15-cis-Phytoene has been found to have structural features that may lead to its resistance to oxidation, which is due to the presence of a double bond at position 9. It has also been found that 15-cis-Phytoene is an optimum substrate for enzymes with carotenoid synthase activity. This chemical can be found in human serum and it is possible that it may play a role in polymerase chain reaction (PCR) control analysis.
