Promethazine sulfoxide is a phenothiazine derivative that is used in the treatment of allergies, colds, and motion sickness. It has been shown to inhibit peroxidases and reactions involving the production of hydrogen peroxide. Promethazine sulfoxide is metabolized by two pathways: one involving oxidation by cytochrome P450 enzymes and another involving hydrolysis by esterases or glucuronidases. The main metabolites are promethazine, promethazine sulfone, and N-methylpromethazine. When applied to urine samples, promethazine sulfoxide can be detected in concentrations of 1-10 ng/mL with an analytical method based on chromatography.
