Pyridostigmine bromide is a cholinergic drug that inhibits the enzyme acetylcholinesterase in the central and peripheral nervous systems. This inhibition leads to an increase in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which has an anti-inflammatory effect on cytokine production. Pyridostigmine bromide is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders, such as bowel disease. It also has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis, because of its ability to inhibit proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TNF-α. Pyridostigmine bromide can be used as an experimental model for inflammatory bowel disease because it is minimally toxic and does not have any phase transition temperature in the human serum.
