Description:Pyrimethamine is an antimalarial agent that has been used in the treatment of various infectious diseases. Pyrimethamine is a folic acid antagonist which inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by inhibiting the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. The drug binds to sulfadiazine, a sulfa drug, which prevents its conversion to active form and thereby prevents bacterial growth. Pyrimethamine can be administered orally or intravenously. It exhibits low toxicity and is excreted in the urine as an inactive metabolite. In vitro assays have shown pyrimethamine to be effective against HIV-1 infection, but it is not active against other viruses such as herpes simplex virus and influenza virus.
