Product Information
Name:Porphobilinogen
Synonyms:
- 5-(Aminomethyl)-4-(carboxymethyl)-1H-pyrrole-3-propanoic acid
Brand:Biosynth
Description:Porphobilinogen is a chemical substance that is created from the breakdown of heme, an iron-containing molecule found in hemoglobin. The enzyme responsible for this process is called porphobilinogen deaminase. Porphobilinogen is also a metabolic intermediate in the synthesis of heme and other substances, such as tetrapyrroles and bilirubin. Porphobilinogen can be used to diagnose various types of infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, and biochemical properties. In order to do so, the patient's blood must be tested for high levels of porphobilinogen. This test can also be used to diagnose erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by hypersensitivity to light and skin lesions.
