Peonidin chloride is a natural compound that has been shown to have antioxidative properties. It inhibits the mitochondrial membrane potential in HL-60 cells and prevents the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Peonidin chloride also binds to the DNA in a reactive form, which may be due to p-hydroxybenzoic acid. The binding of peonidin chloride to DNA leads to an increase in the expression of antioxidant enzymes and a decrease in ROS production. This compound has been demonstrated as an experimental model for oxidative injury with biological properties.
