Phenazine is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of microbial infections. Phenazine inhibits bacterial growth by disrupting the cell membrane, causing lysis and death of the bacteria. Phenazine has been shown to be active against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Phenazine is also an antimicrobial agent that has been found to inhibit the growth of fungi and viruses such as HIV. Galleria mellonella larvae have been used as an animal model for testing phenazines because they are susceptible to infection by herpesvirus. Phenazines have also been shown to suppress autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis in humans.
