2-Phenylthiophene is a strain of influenza virus. It has been shown to infect humans, pigs, and birds. 2-Phenylthiophene can be transmitted from human to human or from animal to animal through contact with bodily fluids or tissues. The virus causes influenza and can be fatal in humans and animals. The strain of 2-phenylthiophene is modified by the addition of an aromatic benzyl group at the amino terminus and a carboxylic acid group at the carboxy terminus. This modification prevents its penetration into cells, as it is unable to bind to cell surface receptors. 2-Phenylthiophene also contains a hydroxy group that allows it to react with carbonyl groups in other substances such as phosphorus pentoxide (PO) and carbonic acid (HCO), which may be used in treatment of influenza infections.
