Pentamethylene sulphide is a reactive molecule that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against Candida glabrata. Pentamethylene sulphide reacts with the hydroxyl group of the cell membrane, leading to damage and leakage of intracellular contents, eventually leading to cell death. Pentamethylene sulphide is active against a range of opportunistic fungal pathogens and can be used as an antifungal agent in topical applications. The reaction mechanism is thought to involve steric interactions between the molecule and the membrane bilayer, which may be facilitated by the presence of a fatty acid moiety. Pentamethylene sulphide binds to receptor sites on mammalian cells and inhibits protein synthesis, preventing growth of candida albicans. Pentamethylene sulphide also reacts with hydrogen fluoride (HF) and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) to form pentamethylenetetrasulphonic acid (PMTS). This reaction is
