It can be activated with chlorine and hydrolyzed to form 2,5-dichloro-p-phenylenediamine (DCPD). DCPD is a viscose activator, which increases the viscosity of the viscose solution. The activation of p-Phenylenediamine-2,5-disulphonic acid with chlorine produces cyanuric chloride as an intermediate product. Cyanuric chloride has been shown to have a yellow colour when dissolved in water.
