It can be obtained by the reaction of sodium formate with carbon tetrachloride in the presence of chloride ion. 4-n-Propylpyridine has bacteriostatic activity and inhibits bacterial cell growth by reacting with transition metal ions, such as magnesium. This interaction may be due to its ability to alkylate these metals. 4-n-Propylpyridine also reacts with peroxide and forms an antibacterial compound that can react with DNA and RNA molecules.
