It inhibits the nitrite ion reaction with inhibitor molecules, as well as the bacterial growth by inhibiting glucose analogue and light emission. Phthalhydrazide has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment because it can inhibit nitrification and denitrification. This drug also has a chemiluminescent reaction that can be used for detection of the presence of the bacterium. Phthalhydrazide has been found to have four crystalline polymorphs, which may be due to its high solubility in water.
