Phenylbutyrate is a prodrug that is converted to phenylacetate by lipase in the gastrointestinal tract. It is used as an antacid, and to treat metabolic acidosis, hyperammonemia, and hepatic encephalopathy. Phenylbutyrate also inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to their ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis. Phenylbutyrate has been shown to inhibit the growth of organisms resistant to other antibiotics such as beta-lactams (e.g., methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) and fluoroquinolones (e.g., Escherichia coli).
