Piperaquine is an antimalarial drug that has been shown to be effective against Plasmodium falciparum. This drug is given as a single-dose therapy and is metabolized by the liver. Piperaquine has a long elimination half-life and a low therapeutic index, making it difficult to dose. A new analytical method was developed for the determination of piperaquine in pharmaceutical preparations using monoclonal antibodies and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The pharmacokinetic properties of piperaquine are well-known, but there is little data available with regards to its safety profile.
