Description:Pyranine is a fluorescent probe that can be used to measure the mitochondrial membrane potential. It binds to the inner membrane of mitochondria and changes its fluorescence properties in response to changes in cellular pH. Pyranine is also a water-soluble dye with an absorption maximum at 524 nm and a fluorescence emission maximum at 525 nm. The probe has been shown to be effective as an optical sensor for hydrogen bonding interactions, such as those present in human serum. Pyranine has also been used as a diagnostic tool for metabolic disorders, including acidosis and diabetes mellitus.
