The redox potential of 2-pyrimidinethiol is very low, which makes it an excellent electron donor. Biological studies have shown that this thione reacts with human serum, forming a molecule that has a tautomeric equilibrium between two different structures. The ph profile of 2-pyrimidinethiol in water is acidic, which may be due to the presence of hydrochloric acid as well as hydrogen bonding with water molecules. This compound has been structurally analyzed and found to have coordination geometry C2v.
